Wicklow Town Places to Visit

Wicklow town is a located on the east coast, south of Dublin and is a harbor town that is the county town of Wicklow. The Irish name for the town is Cill Mhantáin, meaning "church of the toothless one". While the name Wicklow itself comes from the towns Viking past.

Wicklows history centers on its natural harbor which from around 795 AD onwards was used by the Vikings and later the Normans. The Normans later built the ‘Black Castle’ to overlook the harbor and this changed hands many times.

The town has a rich history and is home to a Franciscan abbey, town hall and its famous Gaol. The Gaol was built in 1702 and was renovated into a heritage centre and tourist attraction. There were a number of famous individuals from the town including Captain Robert Halpin for whom an obelisk stands in the town to commemorate him and his work laying telegraph cables across the Atlantic.

Wicklow is well known for its natural beauty with the wide open beach of Wicklow bay to the wildlife reserve of the Murrough there is plenty to visit and see in this town.

Wicklow town has a wide array of amenities. There are many local schools these include both primary and secondary schools. Some of the local schools include Colaiste Chill Mhantain, East Glendalough school, Wicklow educate together national school and the Glebe National School.
The town is home to many sports teams and clubs including football, rugby, hurling and a local tennis club to name a few.
The town has numerous restaurants and pubs offering a wide range of food and drinks. The town also has a number of B&Bs, a hostel and a local hotel which is home to the town’s nightclub.
Due to the towns location there is a wide array of outdoor activities to do including the newly renovated St. Mantan’s park which has playing fields and a playground.

Transport in Wicklow Town

Wicklow is situated off of the N11 motorway and its public transport is catered with an hourly 133 bus to and from Dublin as well as a train service that operates northbound to Dublin Connolly 6 times a day Monday to Friday.

Parking can be found throughout the town with a number of paid car parks situated in the town center.
