Mullingar is County Westmeath's county town, and was traditionally a market town amid a largely rural, agricultural area. Today, it remains appealing for its peaceful feel and scenic environment.

The town's name is derived from a mill mentioned in the legend of the early Irish abbot Saint Colmán mac Luacháin. Mullingar's original name was Maelblatha.

During its lengthy history, Mullingar has also become known for the numerous neighbouring lakes, cattle-trading, and exporting pewterware items manufactured by the local business Mullingar Pewter. It is also known for being the birthplace of One Direction star Niall Horan.

Transport in Mullingar, Westmeath

Both Dublin and Sligo are well-connected to Mullingar. One big reason is that the town is beside the national primary route road N4, which runs between Dublin and Sligo.

Another big reason is that Bus Éireann runs bus routes between these two places and Mullingar. This national operator also provides buses to Athlone, Cavan, Tullamore and Ballina. Mullingar railway station also allows for rail journeys to Dublin and Sligo, thanks to the national train operator Iarnród Éireann.
