Ennis Places to Visit
Ennis comes from the Irish name Inis meaning Island. The town is situated on the River Fergus and is about 20 km from Shannon Airport. According to the 2011 censes of Ireland Ennis had a population of just over 25000 people making it Ireland’s 11 largest urban centre. Ennis is also the winner of the 2012 and 2013 Irish Tidy Towns Competition in the Large Urban Centre category.
Places to Visit in Ennis, Clare
There are lots of things to see and do in Ennis from shopping to sport and just about everything else in between. However Ennis and indeed County Clare are world famous as the home of Traditional Irish Music with year round music festivals and trad sessions throughout the town and county. Many of the local pubs in the town are regularly filled by local musicians which creates a wonderful warm and friendly atmosphere all year around.
There are numerous art galleries and museums in the town all of which give an insight to the lives of the locals past and present.
There are two golf clubs in Ennis. Cusack Park the home of Clare GAA is located in Ennis. Mohammed Ali visited the town in 2009 where he unveiled a statue of himself. Ali’s great grandfather, Abe Grady was born in Ennis. Des Lynam the Radio / Television presenter was born in Ennis in 1942.
There are loads of places to stay in Ennis however be sure to book well in advance especially when there are festivals on.
