This is a great little gem of a place! Tucked away just outside the city centre, it's still really accesible with public transport and the Luas line stops at Suir Road, so only a small walk away. The building itself is amazing, it used to be a hospital for soldiers recuperating. It went into ruin for a while and then in the early 90's was totally transformed into the Irish Museum of Modern Art. They are great alternating their works of art and the coffee shop downstairs is really nice too. read more >>
The art museum is located at the old Kilaminham hospital near Heuston Train Station. There are several wings to the building, each hosting a seperate exhibition usually. There is also a small new building outside which hosts special exhibitions(sometimes pay in fees apply). A good selection of works to see from the collection as well as temporary exhibitions by other artists. well worth a visit read more >>
The collections of the Museum of Modern Art are enormous and there is plenty of variation so it's worth visiting the museum frequently. It's nice to go there on a Sunday, have lunch first at the coffee shop, see the museum and the gardens, and try the home baked cakes and coffee when you're finished. We've done this a couple of times already, it's very relaxing! read more >>
i loved this museum not for the art (which was lovely) or for the gardens ( which r spectacular and great if you hav little kids to run round) or for the shop ( which sold gorgeous cards n books but for the cafe it had its own childrens section which was a seeprate room off the main cafe with loads of tables and toys and art stuff for the kids to play with which i thought was great as you dont feel your anoying anyone of you child is running around climbing on chairs and screaming!! the coffe was devine and reasonably priced!!!! read more >>
I was seriously disappointed with this place.
The staff were seriously rude and I was scolded loudly & publicly on 2 occasions in the space of 5 minutes (once for interacting 'too much' with an installation - which the artist had encouraged, the second time for something more minor)
Some of the work was very good but on the whole I found the whole thing to be pretentious and elitist.
I'm an artist myself and have been to many, many museums and have never experienced anything like it.
The only thing they had going for them was the cafe downstairs.
I definitely won't be going again. read more >>
Had my first visit last week and I really enjoyed the experience. The gardens are amazing and well worth a visit on their own merit. Then into the museum - not knowing what to expect or even if I would enjoy it, I left nearly a couple of hours later, completely engrossed in the exhibits. There is an exhibit called Altered Images that was like nothing I had seen before. The building itself is also magnificent. I have been to MoMA in New York and there are no Andy Warhol's on show here, but it's great to see we have something on offer here - even if on a smaller scale. read more >>
Best collection of contemporary art in Ireland. World renound artists exhibit here as well as our own homegrown talent.
Situated in Royal Hospital Kilmainham the building itself is worth visiting the museum for even if modern art is not your thing.
From time to time they have courses for art appreciation and I have been lucky enough to attend talks given by some of the exhibiting artists.
It's not far from the Heuston Luas stop, make sure you visit the formal gardens too - great thing is it's all free! read more >>
